Somersworth After-School Program Starting this Fall
The HUB, in partnership with the Somersworth School system has been awarded a 21st Century federal grant to develop, coordinate and run the Somersworth Youth Connection (SYC) program, an after school program for the Somersworth, NH middle school students for the next five years.
The goal of the 21st Century Community Learning Center project is to help students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math, offer students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs, and offer literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.
A variety of activities will be provided that meet students’ physical, emotional, social and educational needs, including opportunities for skill building and mastery in literacy, math, arts-based activities, and decision-making. The program also expects to enhance students’ academic success by partnering with participants’ families.
Maureen Call has been hired by the HUB to develop the program and manage the coordinators directly working with the students. Maureen’s background spans nearly 12 years with the Somersworth Recreation and Parks Department. She has successfully developed and implemented community programs and events for all ages for the city of Somersworth. Call has successfully worked with the Somersworth school system, police and fire departments, the public works, Somersworth Chamber of Commerce and Maine Street organization, various local businesses and the Mayor of Somersworth. Call’s career highlights include developing summer recreation programs for children of all ages, and a popular teen program designed for children from grade six through their teen years.
Call states, “The intent of the Somersworth Youth Connection program is to offer fun and educational after-school programs for middle school students to stimulate, motivate, challenge and inspire them academically, emotionally and physically. This program is designed to provide a positive, safe and healthy environment for students after school, and give them the guidance they need. A major piece of this program will also be to teach civic duty and to encourage students and families to give back to their community. We can accomplish these things with the participation and ooperation of the Somersworth school system, city officials and departments, local businesses and most importantly the parents of our Somersworth middle school students. I am excited to continue to strengthen this community and work with many of the people I have developed relationships in the past.”
